The couple had emigrated from Barbados to USA and moved to Ethiopia in 1931 before the outbreak of the Italian Ethiopian war. Although Rabbi Ford died before the invasion, his wife remained in Ethiopia during the Italian occupation. After which, she established and run her own private school in Addis Ababa up until her death in 1996. She was one of the principle minds behind the creation of the EWF Inc.
