Epiphany,
Ethiopian Christmas
Christmas day in Ethiopia is celebrated on the 7th
of January. This celebration is totally focused
on the birth of Christ and his life and works. Epiphany,
known as the twelfth day of Christmas when the three
Kings bestowed their gifts upon the baby Christ,
is celebrated” on the 6th of January. at “Timket”.
Gift giving is only a small part of the day. Celebrations
are held in churches both ancient and modern. The
traditional dish of “Enjera” and “Wat”
is served on this day. Celebrations on this day
are also marked with the playing of a game similar
to hockey called “Genna”. |

Battle
of Adwa
On this day in 1896 at the Battle of Adowa, Ethiopia
delivered a decisive blow to the Italian plans to
colonise Ethiopia. |

African
Liberation Day
African Liberation Day first came about when members
of the free African states met during the first
Pan-African meeting held on African soil in Accra,
Ghana in April 1958. An agreement was reached that
there should be a special day to mark and monitor
the efforts of Africans around the continent to
rid themselves of colonial rule. Today African Liberation
day is celebrated globally by the black people of
the world. |

Haile
Selassie's Birthday
Celebrated by members of the Rastafari faith and
friends of Modern Ethiopianism world wide, the 23rd
of July is the birthday of His Imperial Majesty,
Emperor Haile Selassie I. The Conquering Lion of
the Tribe of Judah was born at Ejersa Gorsa in Ethiopia.
It is one of the Holiest days in the calendar of
the Rastafarian faith. It is celebrated with drums,
chanting and prayer at the Nyahbingi. The 23rd of
July is also an official celebration day in the
constitution of the Ethiopian World Federation.

In Ethiopia, September 11th is the beginning of
the New Year according to the Gregorian calendar.
Known as “Enkuntatash” it is celebrated
by all generations with drums singing dancing and
prayer. |

Coronation
Day
A day commemorating the crowning of the Emperor
Haile Selassie I Emperor of Ethiopia. His Coronation
which took place in 1937 was attended by representatives
of 72 different nations including all the Western
nations. Crowned adorning his Baptismal name ‘Haile
Selassie’ meaning ‘Power of the Trinity’
his ceremony was held at St George’s Cathedral in
Addis Ababa. |
