Heart by-Pass Appeal in conjunction with London Local.
In 1985, it came to the attention of the Ethiopian World Federation Inc., in England, that the daughter of one of the Pioneer Settlers in Shashamane, Ethiopia 19-year-old Colleen Reid, was suffering from a congenital heart disease. Despite efforts to treat her at the Balcha Hospital in Addis Ababa. It soon became apparent that if Colleen Reid s life were to be saved then she would have to come to England to receive treatment.

The major problems were, however, the £8,000 needed to get her over to England and to pay for the treatment that would be carried out at the world famous Papworth Hospital in Cambridge.

Undeterred by the sum needed the Ethiopian World Federation Inc Birmingham, in conjunction with Research and Repatriation Committee in London who initiated the Colleen Reid Appeal set out to raise the required amount. A number of fundraising events were undertaken; i.e; a sponsored walk from Bristol to Manchester; Dances, Culture Shows, Concerts, Sponsored Bike Rides from Birmingham to Oxford they all helped to make up the overall amount needed. On 27th October 1985, only months after the launch of the appeal, Colleen Reid and her father arrived in England.
In June 1991, Colleen Reid once again underwent a heart operation. Sadly whilst being operated on at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge Colleen Reid passed on. She was 25 years old. Colleen Reid was the daughter of Harold Reid, (Brother Reidy) an EWF settler from Jamaica presently resident on Land Grant in Ethiopia.
